Chapter 38 Knowledge Does Not Serve Vampires!
Chapter 38 Knowledge Does Not Serve Vampires!
The broken door, which was about to close, suddenly stopped.
Through the crack in the door, a pair of sharp, frightening eyes were fixed on Constantine's face, as if trying to drill two holes in it.
The air suddenly became stagnant.
The musty, rotten smell in the hallway seemed to vanish in that instant.
Constantine, with a peaceful smile on his face, took a half step forward and spoke, breaking the suffocating silence.
"Professor Andreas Kofinas?"
His voice was clear, carrying a natural respect, as if the person before him was not a destitute drunkard, but the most respected scholar at the University of Athens.
"I am Constantine. I have read your paper and have come to visit you."
"Constantine?"
Andreas first muttered the name to himself, his eyes filled with confusion.
The next second, he was struck as if by lightning, and his whole body jolted violently!
His hawk-like eyes swept across Constantine's features, then quickly glanced at Alexandros behind him, who looked tense.
The other person's demeanor, the casual clothes that were deliberately distressed but still couldn't hide the high-quality fabric, and that calm and composed demeanor...
He recognized him!
The bewilderment on Andreas's face quickly faded, replaced by an extremely distorted, ironic smile.
That smile made his already gaunt face look even more terrifying.
"Heh...hehehe..."
He let out a few dry laughs, like the grinding of rusty gears.
"Constantine? His Highness the Crown Prince?"
Andreas suddenly yanked the door open completely, but didn't move aside at all. Instead, he crossed his arms and leaned against the mottled door frame.
He scrutinized Constantine repeatedly, from top to bottom and then from bottom to top, with an almost rude, appraising look.
"What a rare guest! How could a rat's hole like ours be worthy of the presence of such a noble person as yourself?"
Every word he spoke was laced with venom.
Alexandros's face instantly turned a deep liver color!
This is a blatant insult!
He was about to lash out when Constantine stopped him with a very subtle gesture.
Constantine remained calm, as if he hadn't noticed the barb in the other person's words at all.
Seeing that the other party did not react, Andreas's mockery deepened.
He tilted his head, pointed with his chin to the dirty street outside, and asked in a flippant tone:
"What's wrong?"
"Is it those old fogies in the cabinet, or some director of the National Bank, who's got their eyes on this land that's about to collapse?"
"Or is it that the royal family is short of money again and is planning to issue some kind of 'patriotic bonds' to squeeze the last penny out of us poor folks?"
These words were no longer just an insult, but a direct accusation!
Alexandros could no longer hold back!
As the Crown Prince's attendant, he had never suffered such a humiliating disgrace!
More importantly, the other party was not insulting him, but the Crown Prince to whom he had sworn to serve!
"presumptuous!"
Alexandros flew into a rage. He took a sudden step forward, pointed at Andreas's nose, and shouted angrily, "How dare you speak to His Highness the Crown Prince in such a tone! You..."
"Hahahaha!"
Before he could finish his rant, he was abruptly interrupted by an even sharper and more ear-piercing burst of maniacal laughter!
Andreas laughed so hard he almost cried, his thin body leaning against the doorframe, coughing violently as he laughed, looking like a broken bellows.
He laughed for a good ten seconds before he finally managed to stop.
He raised his face, flushed red from maniacal laughter, and with his thin, bony finger, jabbed his chest fiercely. He roared at Constantine with all his might:
"presumptuous?"
"I'll show you what true, fucking audacity is!"
His voice exploded in the narrow stairwell, making people's eardrums ache!
"It's you! It's you high and mighty royalty! It's those bloated oligarchs!"
"It is you who hold the lifeblood of this country in your hands, using price scissors and usury to bankrupt hardworking farmers overnight and leave them homeless!"
"You are the ones who have killed off all the new factories, leaving workers who yearn to change their fate with their own hands to starve in the docks and mines!"
"You are the biggest vampires in this country! You are the most outrageous robbers!"
Andreas's bloodshot eyes burned with five years of pent-up hatred and rage, enough to incinerate everything!
He stared intently at Constantine, his gaze seeming to want to devour him alive.
"Now, you've come here to me, this unfortunate soul who's been gnawed down to the bones by you all..."
His voice suddenly lowered, but the resentment and malice intensified.
"Do you want to see just how successful your masterpiece is?"
"Or do you want to turn me into one of your kept dogs, a lackey who will wag its tail and beg for mercy, devising plans to kill even more poor bastards?!"
These words were like the dirtiest mud, splashed hard on Constantine's face.
Alexandros trembled all over, his lips quivering with rage, his hand already on the weapon at his waist.
With just a glance from the Crown Prince, he would not hesitate to have this madman dragged out!
However, Constantine did not.
He stood there quietly the whole time, listening attentively.
He didn't argue, didn't get angry, and his facial expression didn't even change much.
He simply looked at the man before him, consumed by hatred, and at the undisguised pain in his eyes.
Andreas has vented his anger.
He was breathing heavily, his chest heaving like a broken bellows.
The hallway fell into a deathly silence once again.
He looked at Constantine's overly calm face, the flame in his eyes slowly dying out, eventually turning into cold, lifeless ashes.
He tugged at the corners of his mouth, revealing a smile that looked more like a grimace.
"Please return, Your Highness."
He straightened up and, in an extremely weary yet resolute tone, uttered his last words.
"My knowledge, my mind, everything I have..."
He paused, then spoke each word clearly and distinctly.
"I won't serve vampires!"
"I'd rather it rot and die with me in this attic!"
After saying that, he didn't look at Constantine again, and with all his might, he swung his arm back!
"Bang--!"
A loud bang!
The dilapidated wooden door was slammed shut, sending dust flying down throughout the hallway.
The door was closed just like that.
It was like a resounding slap, landing hard on everyone's faces.
Constantine, the crown prince of the Greek kingdom, and all the goodwill and plans he brought were ruthlessly shut out.
