Chapter 49 The Aftermath of the Zhao State
Chapter 49 The Aftermath of the Zhao State
"Where's the evidence?"
"The evidence is conclusive." Bai Yuan handed over a stack of letters. "These are his correspondence with the Qin army."
Xia Bing glanced at the letter, her expression growing increasingly cold.
"Walk."
He led Bai Yuan to the captain's residence.
"Who goes there?" The guards at the gate stopped them.
"People from the Ministry of Justice." Xia Bing flashed her token. "Ordered to arrest the traitor."
"A traitor?" The guard paused, taken aback. "Who?"
"Your master."
The guard's expression changed drastically, and he tried to stop him.
But Xia Bing didn't give him a chance.
He struck out with his palm, and the guard fell to the ground.
"Go in."
Xia Bing led her men into the mansion and dragged the captain off the bed.
"Xia Bing?!" the captain exclaimed in horror, "You...how did you get here?"
"I'm here to arrest you." Xia Bing threw the letter at his face. "What's this?"
The captain's face turned deathly pale.
"This...this is..."
"No need for explanation," Xia Bing said. "Come with me."
"Xia Bing, I...I can explain..."
"Explain what?" Xia Bing sneered, "Explain how you betrayed your country?"
The captain trembled all over.
"I...I was forced..."
"Forced?" Xia Bing's eyes grew even colder. "Being forced means you can sell out your country?"
"Take him away." He waved his hand. "Hand him over to Han Fei to deal with."
"yes."
Bai Yuan led his men to take the captain away.
Xia Bing stood there, looking at the mansion in the night.
"Next," he whispered.
……
The next few days.
Xia Bing made a series of moves and captured more than a dozen accomplices.
These people included military officers, government officials, and businessmen.
They had different identities, but the same goal—to serve the Qin state.
"Is that enough?" Jingni asked.
"That's about it," Xia Bing said. "The main people have been caught; the rest are just small fry."
"So what's next?"
"Next..." Xia Bing looked into the distance, "it all depends on the fate of South Korea."
……
(Life in Xinzheng City remains hectic.)
(But some of the termites were eventually removed.)
Some more days passed.
The Qin army's offensive was drawing ever closer.
Outside Hangu Pass, the Qin army camp stretched for dozens of miles, with banners waving and a murderous aura emanating from it.
People across South Korea are filled with anxiety.
The King of Han convened a court assembly and ultimately decided to surrender.
"Surrender?" Xia Bing sneered upon hearing the news. "Just as I expected."
"The King of Korea has no backbone," Jing Ni said. "He surrendered without even fighting."
"We can't win even if we fight," Xia Bing shook her head. "Instead of making a futile resistance, it's better to surrender sooner."
"At least some lives can be saved."
"And what about you?" the Snow Woman asked. "What should we do?"
"Evacuate," Xia Bing said. "Han Fei has agreed to come with us."
Where to?
"Let's go to Zhao first," Xia Bing said. "Zhao can still hold out for a while."
"Then what?"
"Then..." Xia Bing looked into the distance, "we'll see."
Everyone fell silent.
They knew this meant they had to leave South Korea.
"Xia Bing," Li Wu said, "I don't want to leave."
Why?
"I've been in Korea for so long..." Li Wu said softly, "I've developed some feelings for it."
"But it's no longer safe here," Xia Bing said. "The Qin state won't let anyone go."
"I know," Li Wu nodded, "but..."
"No buts." Xia Bing interrupted her, "Come with us, we'll come back later."
"Once Qin unifies the world, you can all come back if you wish."
Li Wu fell silent.
She knew Xia Bing was telling the truth.
"Okay." She finally nodded. "I'll go with you."
"That's good." Xia Bing smiled. "Pack your things, we're leaving tomorrow."
"Um."
……
The next morning.
Everyone packed their belongings and prepared to leave.
Zi Nu came to see him off.
"Young Master Xia," she said, standing in the doorway, "have a safe journey."
"Zi Nu, aren't you coming with us?" Xia Bing asked.
"No," Zi Nu shook her head, "Zi Lan Xuan is my root; I cannot leave."
"But……"
"Don't worry," Zi Nu said with a smile, "I'll take good care of myself."
"And..." she paused, "King Han surrendered, so Zilan Pavilion is actually safe."
"Without the cover of night, no one bothers me anymore."
Xia Bing looked at her and sighed.
"Okay." He nodded. "Take care."
"You too," Zi Nu said with a smile. "Come back and visit often when you have time."
Yes, it will.
The two looked at each other and then remained silent.
Some things are understood without being said.
"Young Master Xia," Zi Nu suddenly spoke.
"Um?"
"Thank you... for accepting me."
"You're welcome." Xia Bing smiled. "You're my woman."
"That will never change."
Zi Nu looked at him, her eyes slightly red.
"Um."
She turned and left.
When she reached the end of the alley, she looked back.
Xia Bing was still standing there, waving at her.
She waved and then turned to leave.
Some partings are for a better reunion.
……
We left the city gate.
Han Fei and Wei Zhuang were already waiting.
"Young Master Xia," Han Fei bowed, "thank you for your willingness to take me in."
"You're welcome," Xia Bing said with a smile. "It's good to have company on the journey."
"Then let's go."
"good."
The group set off on their journey north.
Behind us, the city of Xinzheng gradually receded into the distance.
