Chapter 1042: The Black Shop
Chapter 1042: The Black Shop
Qi Er added beans to the feed trough, and You Er pulled out a bottle from the bag he carried, filled with honey. The trusted aide brought over some water, and You Er poured the honey into the water, feeding it to the mares.
The eyes of the two waiters turned green with envy. They smelled the sweet aroma of the honey; this was the first time they had seen mares being fed honey.
People couldn’t afford such a luxury, yet the mares drank it, which showed how valuable these two horses were.
Since obtaining these two horses, nearly every meal for the mares was personally attended to by Qi Er and You Er.
The Duke said that only this way could the horses build a deep bond with their owners.
Qi Er then took out two carrots and fed them to the mares, after which the two of them entered the inn.
The inn shopkeeper saw them come in and cheerfully asked, "How many rooms would you like?"
Qi Er said, "Two rooms."
The shopkeeper smiled, "There are six of you, and you only want two rooms? Won’t that be cramped?"
Qi Er said, "Just two rooms, but give us some extra clean bedding, and we’ll pay more."
The shopkeeper no longer tried to persuade them and instructed the waiter to take them upstairs and open the rooms for them.
Four trusted aides were there: one to take care of the horses in the stable outside, two followed Qi Er and You Er upstairs, and one stayed in the main hall, telling the shopkeeper, "Prepare meals for several people."
The shopkeeper smiled, "No problem."
The waiter by the door, without needing instructions from the shopkeeper, called inside, "Mother, we have guests. Start cooking."
A plump woman waddled out from the back and went into the kitchen.
The trusted aides followed her in.
The shopkeeper and the waiter exchanged a glance.
The waiter whispered, "Dad, I think those two horses are not ordinary. I’ve never seen such magnificent horses."
The shopkeeper nodded, licking his lips, "These two are fat sheep."
The waiter nodded along, then glanced toward the kitchen, "They’re really cautious, even following into the kitchen. With someone watching, mom can’t tamper with the food."
"We’ll have to wait until tonight."
The shopkeeper hesitated, "With horses like those, they might not be ordinary people. Will we get into trouble?"
The waiter whispered, "So what? If we sell these horses, they surely have plenty of silver. We wouldn’t need to run this shabby inn anymore, and we’d be set for life."
The shopkeeper pondered for a moment, "How much these horses are worth is hard to say."
"Also, such conspicuous horses might be hard to sell, and Niu San, the horse dealer, might not even take them."
The waiter thought for a moment, "Then I’ll go find Niu San, the horse dealer, and have him take a look."
Just then, the trusted aide watching over the horses came inside, asking where the kitchen was, and he went in to find a tea bowl. He rinsed it with hot water, then brought out the tea bowl and teapot.
Then from his small bag, he took out tea leaves and brewed a few cups of tea.
The waiter and the shopkeeper stopped talking. The waiter ran in and out, wiping tables and fetching bowls and chopsticks.
Upstairs, Qi Er and You Er came down, sat in the hall, drinking tea and waiting.
During this time, another trusted aide entered the kitchen.
Soon the kitchen had finished cooking, and the waiter served the dishes, smiling as he asked, "What kind of wine would you like?"
Qi Er said, "No wine."
The waiter didn’t say more, smiled, bowed, and stepped back.
After eating, one trusted aide stayed downstairs to watch over the horses, while the others went upstairs.
The waiter changed clothes and rode a mule out from the backyard.
You Er happened to open the window and watched the man ride the mule into the darkness.
He stood in front of the window, thoughtfully for a while, then went to the next room.
