Chapter 980: The Emperor’s Procession
Chapter 980: The Emperor’s Procession
Though it was hard for the people outside the carriage to see inside through the small windows, the Duke had told them before that when the emperor traveled, the people needed to see the etiquette of the Royal Family and the court. Even sitting in the carriage, they still had to observe and maintain this etiquette from the heart. The two children were very obedient, controlling their curiosity and refraining from looking around even though they were itching to do so.
Yun Jiao and Jiang Youzhi sat in the second carriage on the left. Through the thin silk curtains, they could see the citizens standing solemnly along the street.
Even while sitting in the carriage, Yun Jiao was dressed in full noble attire, her back straight, sitting properly, with even the hair ornament on her head barely moving.
After the eight carriages passed, a couple of cavalry units followed.
Both the cavalry’s horses and the ones pulling the carriages were tall steeds, all in a uniform chestnut color, purchased in recent years from the former Great Liao, now Jin Country.
Behind the cavalry units were six units of armored infantry.
Following the infantry, there were two more units of soldiers, each holding twelve dragon banners.
After the dragon banners came two columns of carriages.
These carriages were not of the usual style; there were direction-guiding carriages, odometer carriages, command flag carriages, and so on.
Behind the carriages followed cavalry with swords, along with archers carrying bows.
Immediately after the cavalry units was the royal orchestra.
The orchestra had hundreds of musicians, playing instruments like sheng, flute, pipe, drum, and suona, moving forward slowly with the music.
Behind the orchestra was the Imperial Guard’s honor guard, holding various banners, canopies, and command flags, with an imposing presence that seemed to block out the sky.
Following the honor guard were two large flags; the Green Dragon Banner on the left, the White Tiger Banner on the right. Accompanying officials rode on horseback, divided into two lines proceeding with the banners, flanked by cavalry and infantry.
Further back were the emperor’s carriages.
Cavalry and infantry, armed with arrows, swords, and blades, enclosed the bright yellow imperial chariot tightly.
The citizens along the way knelt to the ground when the emperor’s carriages passed by.
Following the emperor’s carriages were two more columns of the honor guard.
After the honor guard, came the carriages of the Empress Dowager, Empress, concubines, princes, and princesses.
Further behind was a rear guard unit composed of cavalry and infantry.
Following this, there was a formation of twenty-four cavalry units and twelve flag units.
At the very end of the procession were the attendants such as palace maids and eunuchs, with Yang Ying riding in one of the carriages.
The entire convoy comprised several thousand people, stretching for several miles from front to back.
After leaving the northern city gate and traveling some distance, there were gradually no more onlookers on either side of the road.
Jiang Youzhi turned to look at Yun Jiao, noticing her cheeks were flushed, and sweat covered her forehead and nose tip.
He quickly helped remove the cape from Yun Jiao’s shoulders and loosened her collar a bit.
Yun Jiao opened a folding fan and fanned herself desperately at the collar.
Jiang Youzhi swiftly loosened his robe, moving closer to Yun Jiao inside to catch some cool air, "Luckily, it’s cloudy today; otherwise, we’d really be dying from the heat inside."
Yun Jiao kept shaking her fan, "When can I change out of these clothes already?"
Jiang Youzhi comforted her, "Not too long now; once the procession stops at noon, you’ll be able to change clothes."
He took the fan from Yun Jiao’s hand, "Your hand must be tired; I’ll fan you."
Yun Jiao simply rolled up the silk curtains on both sides of the carriage, letting more wind in, eliminating the need for the fan.
Jiang Youzhi put down the fan, wrapped his arm around Yun Jiao’s waist, and whispered, "Jiao Jiao, would you sit on my lap?"
Yun Jiao rolled her eyes and turned away, ignoring him.
